Hands!!!
I recently came across an artist by the name of Guido Daniele through an email my sister sent me. He is truly a modern-day master of painting. He not only paints murals, but also is known for his body art. Below are just a few of my favourites. Enjoy! To find out more about Guido Daniele, visit www.guidodaniele.com.

Oh, Javascript!
JavascriptSo I've been experimenting with many web languages and tools lately. Trying to make that transition from print to web has definitely opened my eyes to so many design possibilities! Just the other day, Lindsay sent me a cool little javascript application. I've seen avatars (very basically, an avatar is a "digitized" version of you) like this before and have always wondered how they are generated. Now you can see for yourself. Check it out! It's actually a service called SitePal. You can customize the speach and appearance of your avatar, thus taking conventional static avatars to the "next level." It's a cute little tool that can be added to your website if you are looking for something a little extra!

Not So Cool
Ninia by Nina Ricci
Twilight Lion Lamb Fragrance

The similarities of these two perfume bottles are undeniable. In fact, they look almost identical. The question is, how did this happen?

I should clarify that the photo to your left (Nina by Nina Ricci) was the first to distribute the product in this bottle. Word has it that they are taking legal action against the new Twilight fragrance (right).

So, how did this happen? From a personal standpoint, I believe that the creators of the Twilight fragrance didn't put in very much thought into the design and therefore purchased the bottle design, thinking that it is a "one and only." I'm sure that many of you have seen the movie "Bring It On," where the cheerleading squad hires a choreographer that's been teaching the same moves to other teams in the area and eventually performs the same routine as another competing team. How embarassing! I think this is the same scenerio.

Being a huge fan of the Twilight books, I think this is a very unfortunate situation for them. Since the scents of the characters are described so vividly in the books, you'd think that they'd put a little more thought into it, or atleast did some research.

I googled "apple bottle" under google images. If they had done this, they would have saved themselves a whole lot of trouble.

Lesson of the day: do proper research before mass distributing something that isn't original.

In Rememberance
I'd like to ask all readers to please take a moment during today, November 11th, 2008 to reflect upon the sacrifices Canadian soldiers have made for us during times of war. The significance of November 11th is that it marks the end of World War I in 1918.

Obama, McCain, and the Utilization of Search Engine Optimization (S.E.O.)
As most of you know, the presidential election between Barack Obama and John McCain have been one of the most dramatic and competitive in U.S. history. With the United States electing its first African American president who was running against the oldest candidate who would have protentially won with his first ever female vice president, this election was truly history in the making. With such historical importance, comes well calculated marketing.

With advanced technology on the rise, these two candidates have an advantage over the past presidential candidates when it comes to marketing themselves. They have the advantage of search engine optimization. According to AdGooroo, Obama does better in natural search rankings, which means that someone is more likely to do searches in Google or any other search engine on Obama, while John McCain uses more of the paid per click advertising. Obama ranks on the first page of unpaid results for 117 keywords, according to AdGooroo, while McCain had 226 paid search keywords he was targeting without even being sure that those keywords were even being searched. So what does this all mean? According to these results, Obama seemed to have utilized search engine optimization more appropriately because he didn't have to pay to gain search engine popularity. This proves that if you know the right techniques, you don't have to pay for people to find you.

Daylight Savings - Fun Fact

The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

If you live near the equator, day and night are nearly the same length (12 hours). But elsewhere on Earth, there is much more daylight in the summer than in the winter. The closer you live to the North or South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer. Thus, Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time) is usually not helpful in the tropics, and countries near the equator generally do not change their clocks.

Sticky Marketing - A Brief Pork and Beans Analysis

Title: Weezer Video

I've lost count at the amount of times I watched this video. It's so smart in its marketing tactics. It's reached over 13 million views on youtube in less than 4 months of its release, not to mention many youtubers who've taken the video and reposted it in their own accounts.
The video is called Pork and Beans performed by Weezer. For those of you who frequent youtube, you've probably seen this already, but for those who don't, here's a one sentence summery: they've compiled a group of some of the most memorable people on youtube and made a music video out of it. When I mean "memorable," I don't just mean the kind that you can mildly recall, I mean the kind where the videos "stick" in your head.

Take a minute to enjoy the video Pork and Beans by Weezer, and see how many youtube celebs you can identify.

This video is the prime example of Viral Marketing. Viral Marketing is a form of marketing in which the campaign's main success is generated by word of mouth. In other words, we, the user have made this video successful, but that's not what makes this video an example of sticky marketing. This video holds a strategy: give people more of what they've already seen, what's already been proven successful, and in turn, be successful from it.

As most of you know, youtube has been an online success, with millions of viewers every day. Now can you think of any memorable videos that won't leave your head that you might find on youtube? How about that Shoes girl/guy? Or the Chocolate Rain dude? or Miss Teen South Carolina's speaking mishap on stage? Or the star wars duals? Or the evolution of dance guy? Or the afro ninja? Or Chris Crocker, the "Leave Britney Alone" guy? Or.you get the point. Now take all of the most "sticky" youtube celebrities and put them into one 3 minute music video, and voila! You've got Pork and Beans. Now how cool is that?

It's totally stuck in my head, how about yours?
